Keep Your Bike Safe |
||
|
Unfortunately, both Healum Avenue and Hillary Road have recently been affected by bike thefts. In these cases, suspects broke locks to access communal storage areas where bikes were kept. To help keep your bike secure and avoid becoming a statistic, here is some crime prevention advice: Use two quality locks—at least one should be a D-lock. Thieves rarely carry multiple tools, so two different types of locks make your bike a harder target. Always lock the frame and both wheels to a secure cycle stand. Position your bike close to the stand to limit space for thieves to work. Take detachable items like lights, baskets, or saddles with you. Alternatively, use locking skewers or nuts for extra security. Park at recognised secure cycle stands in well-lit areas covered by CCTV. Add your frame number to a national bike registration database approved by Secured by Design. This helps police return your bike if it’s recovered. Security marking is a visible deterrent. Thieves know a marked bike can be traced back to its owner. Lock your bike securely even at home. Avoid advertising that you own a bike—remove roof racks and use privacy settings on apps like Strava. When purchasing second-hand, ask for proof of ownership and check the frame number on approved databases. Report theft online immediately. Provide your frame number, registration details, and photos. Update your bike’s status on the database to help us act quickly. | ||
